Adding Text and Effects in editing

Text and Effects

In our video we added Text and Effects in a couple shots. The text we used was very bold. We used different colours for different shots. Some text was big and some was medium. All of the text was positioned in different places (middle, corners etc) . We used urban looking font styles to make the text match the sort of genre song it is. I made some of the text match the lyrics in the song which makes it look very good/urban. I also added our nick names to the footage at the beginning which introduces our characters.

We also added effects on the beginning and middle of our video. In the beginning we have a black image which slides down, this shows the south bank footage and the title of our video ' Pats and JB- I Play Dirty'. This introduces the song. We also added a 'fade in fade out' effect on one of the texts saying 'Legend'. This makes the video look more interesting and urban, which shows the genre of the song presented.

Problem during editing

Problem

We had some difficulties during the ending of our editing. We though the shots with the green screen room will not give us any problem, but we thought wrong. All the ideas and images we had for the background did not look good and made us have to resolve into something else. First we just put a plane white background on the green screen, but this looked unprofessional. So we searched for good images that could match our video like; black curtains, red curtains, city view from the window, stars, colourful designs. But this this not look good either.

Window Curtain Black HD wallpaper for Standard 4:3 5:4 Fullscreen UXGA XGA SVGA QSXGA SXGA ; Wide 16:10 5:3 Widescreen WHXGA WQXGA WUXGA WXGA WGA ; HD 16:9 High Definition WQHD QWXGA 1080p 900p 720p QHD nHD ; Other 3:2 DVGA HVGA HQVGA devices ( Apple PowerBook G4 iPhone 4 3G 3GS iPod Touch ) ; Mobile VGA WVGA iPhone iPad PSP Phone - VGA QVGA Smartphone ( PocketPC GPS iPod Zune BlackBerry HTC Samsung LG Nokia Eten Asus ) WVGA WQVGA Smartphone ( HTC Samsung Sony Ericsson LG Vertu MIO ) HVGA Smartphone ( Apple iPhone iPod BlackBerry HTC Samsung Nokia ) Sony PSP Zune HD Zen ; Tablet 2 Android ; Dual 4:3 5:4 16:10 5:3 16:9 UXGA XGA SVGA QSXGA SXGA WHXGA WQXGA WUXGA WXGA WGA WQHD QWXGA 1080p 900p 720p QHD nHD ;

So another idea I came up with, is to keep the green from the green screen, and just cut the black bits on the sides to make it look unakward. This would make the visuals look good but the examiners will know that we had a problem and we could not solve it, it would look cheap. So we still have to decide on what to do in the green screen, but if we cannot find anything, our last resolution is to keep the green screen background.

Skills Development 2 - Production

Editing Skills:

. I have learnt how to mark videos

. I have learnt how to match the videos with the marks on the actual song

. I have learnt how to use the cuting tool properly

. I have learnt how to organise my footage to make it easier when it comes to deciding which one you want to use

. I have learnt how to put an input and output on a clip

. I have learnt how to render a clip

. I have learnt how to make my cuts look fast pace

. I have learnt how to put my clips on to match the beat of the song

. I have learnt how to add writing into my clips

. I have learnt how to add special effects onto my clips

.I have learnt how to add transactions inbetween my clips

Overview

What have you done so far in the editing?

.We have gone through our clips and chosen the apropriate clips we want to use and the ones that are not good quality enough.

.We have then chosen all our base tracks and marked them with a word to match the word on the song. This means the video will be on beat with the song and it will not look akward.

.Then we put these base tracks onto the correct moment of the song and sorted them out on the timeline.

.This then led us to cuting. We cut through all our base tracks and sorted the visuals out on how we want them to look.

.We also added a couple cut aways on places we think they will look good

What do you have  left to do in the editing?

.We still have to record some more footage as we are missing vital visuals that we had planned and think will make our video look evan better

.We also have to add more cutaways in places we think they will match and look good.

.Then we have to add all of the effects and slow motions onto the places we think will be good.

.Finaly add writing into the clips that require them from the plan we made

What was the best part of this project for you?

I really enjoyed the filming process of it, because it was very fun and we got to work with everyone that was involved in our video. Also it was more exiting as i got to do more practical work.

If there is anything you could change, what would it be?

This would be to make sure we got more footage during the recording process and get everything done more quicker which could lead us to more time in the editing section.

Cars Used and there effect

Cars

Ford Fiesta

This car was good for our video because it is blacked out, and has dark windows. It makes the video look more 'gangster' which the artists are trying to show. It is a good looking car which many people watching the video would be shocked to see.

Vauxhall Astra

This car was effective because it has a nice manly shape, which makes the people in the car look scary and also 'gangster'. It suits the genre of our song and will also make our video suit the song. Its lighting from the bulbs infront helped us because the area was dark and the lighting helped us with the quality of the image.

Jaguar

This car was effective because we wanted to make our rappers look rich and wealthy. This car made that happen because the make of it made the artist look like he had an expensive car. This made the artist look big and powerful. It is a good looking car, which will make our video look nice, plus make our mise en scene good.

Nissan Micra

This small car was used as an extra. The more cars that were seen, the better the video looked. We placed all the cars together to make our video look like a gangster hood video. This car was also used to hold the equipment so that they will stay safe and also so no one can steal them/forget them somewhere.

Feedback From people involved in our video

FeedBack

JB

This is 'JB', he has helped us in our filming by being the other artists and coming various locations with us to film our video. He has also given us many ideas on how and where we should take our footage. He told us so far, our shots have been good because they really express the structure of a music video.

Romeo

This is Romeo, he has participated in our video and become a person in many of our cutaways and performed in our base tracks. He brang many props to our scenes like, alcohol, shades, chains and more people for our house party scene. He told us that our locations are good and our mise en scene matches the kind of things people would have in our song type.

Khari

This is Khari. He supplied us with his car and brang a couple friends with more cars so we can do plenty of good looking footage. Him and his friends where very patient, and listened to all the instructions we told them to do ( Like moving there cars in different positions), plus doing them spot on. This made our filming easier and structured. He told us that we have plenty of good cutaways which need to be put in our video, it will make our video look better and unique.

Sian

This is Sian. She brang some of her female friends to our house party scene to make our house party look realistic. She got involved in our work and made our footage look like an actual house party, not boring. She danced and had fun. She told us that our house party scene looks very good and realistic. She also said that the house party scenes will suit the genre of the song and make it look good.

Where we was filming

In a House

We filmed inside a house for the 'house party' scene. This ment we had to clean the house and move any objects which could interfeer with our recording. We moved some tables, a couple draws so it is flexible to move with the camera, and safe for the people around us. This allowed us to get shots which make the party looked packed and realistic.

In a Car

We also filmed inside cars, this ment we had to have a clear space around us and be parked in a safe environment. Lighting was important here because without it, the footage would not look professional. We also had to move any unnecessary objects which could disturb our filming and make the footage look bad.

Outside on the streets

We parked up our cars in an empty street and got some footage of the 2 artists performing there lyrics with a couple of people. This ment we had to be organised and fast incase another car wanted to past the street and disturb our filming. We all worked together to make a successful outcome and move on to the next location.

In the Green Screen room

We filmed a part of our footage in the green screen room. This was mostly for our chorus and a couple cutaways to express the male gaze idea. This ment we had a girl in different outfits singing the chorus and doin male gaze actions like 'blowing a kiss to the camera'. We had a limited amount of time so we had to work quickly and effectively to get enough, good footage. This means we stuck to our plan and filmed everyhting we needed to do for the base tracks, then moved on to the cutaways, as they was less important.

Troubles in our Filming

We had a problem while filming, the lighting was not good and made the visulas look unprofessional. This was because we was filming at night in the dark and our lights were not affecting anything. So then we moved to another place where we could park up the cars and film, but then it was too bright which cancelled out on the camera and made it dark anyway.

Another problem we had during filming, is that we left the camera on autofocus which ment everytime the camera was moved a little, it would go blurry. This ment many time was wasted on trieng to solve the problem and film in the angles where it was not going blurry on the camera. Many people could not perform the roles they had to do as the camera kept messing up.

Ideas for Editing

Ideas

We was thinking to have an opening that introduces our 2 characters. We want to do this by geting 2 cars to pull up, and in slow motion get both artists to come out the cars, then a freeze shot would come and bold/big/fancy writing would appear with the artists names (Pats/JB).  We will have many cuts in our video because there is going to be plenty of cutaways of many different things. The base tracks are going to be the 2 artists raping with girls/towards a girl in the house, the artists infront of cars, artists in a house party, and artists infront of green screen. For the chorus we are planning to have a girl singing the lyrics in a male gaze way. We planned for her to sit on the chair in legins and heels. We are going to do many different camera angle shots to show the male gaze idea. During the video we are going to add many of effects to make the visuals look unique. Our video is goint to be very fast pace and show many different things.

Skills Development - Production

Planning the project

This year we have aproached a different teqnichue to planing our project. Last year for the thriller opening i came up with an idea first, then organised the structure of the opening. This year we organised the structure of the music video and then this brang breif ideas to us, which then we expanded on. This year we whent through the lyrics and for every sentence, wrote the ideas that came to us, then at the end chose the best, reasonable ones. This ment we could choose the base tracks and organise our cutaways. It also brang us the location and kind of mise en scene we would except. Last year we was not that organised, and just done things as they came. An important reason why we had to be organised is because we where doing a planned house party for our video, which ment we had to rely on a couple of people. This is why our planning was stronger than last years planning for the project.

Analysis of Lyrics with step by step visual ideas.

We evan redone some of our story board to perfect our planning and make sure it looks to the best quality it can. We was told we did not introduce the characters properly in the begining so we had to change our opening.

Production - Filming Day Two

Day Two Filming

Our next main day of filming was on the 2nd November. We started of the evening filming the car shots outside and later on filmed the party scenes. We filmed several base tracks on this occasion and used a variety of angles providing us with strong clear base tracks. We filmed many cut aways of cars, the house party scene and friends. We done this as we wanted to add these to our video and amplify our video and highlight the fact that it is an example of disjuncture.

What we done different from our first day of Filming -
On this occasion when we went out filming we got a lot more equipment. Instead of using the small light that you attach to the we got the bigger light with the stand. We also got two batteries for the light and two batteries for the Camcorder which came in handy as the battery for the Camcorder ran out half way through the evening.

Problems with Our Filming -
Although we had a much bigger, brighter light our base tracks still came out a bit dark. We used all the light we  could and even used our phones and the street lights to help light up our footage. This light as also not strong enough and did not work affectively to light up our footage properly.
