Production - Filming Day One

Filming Day One

This is a picture almost identical to the light we used.

On our first day of filming we went to South Bank. We filmed several cut aways of south bank, we also used this day to get into the filming and used it as inspiration for shot ideas. We had some problems while our first day filming which was lighting. We were filming in the evening and had a the small night that attaches on top of the JVC Camcorder. This light was not strong enough and it did not light up our performers when we tried to  film a base track.
This lighting was to dim and not strong enough to light up our performers. Also it did not last long and the battery soon died on the light as well as on the  camera.

JVC Camcorder

This showed us that we  was not fully repaired and that we should of experimented with the lighting to check that it would look good while filming. On our next day of filming which will b next week, we are planning to use a stronger light  with a stand and are going to make sure we get extra batteries for both lights, camcorder and mini speakers.

All our day of filming went okay but could of been much better if we were better organised and plannedit down to every detail.

Draft Story Board - PLANNING

Amended story board (opening)

We were told by our teacher that in the opening shots we must establish and introduce our artists (something we didn't do in the original story board). We have amended this by adding and changing some shots to ensure that the artists are clearly introduced.

When the artists arrive at the scene their names will be displayed in a few second freeze shot. This not only introduces them but also continues with our genre and theme as in other music videos of the same genre this is something you may expect to see.

Mood board - Brand Image - Planning

This is our mood board reflecting our artist's image, giving ideas of clothing, props and accessories.

Final Song Choice Planning

Final Song Choice

Krept and Konan- I Play Dirty

We have decided to choose this video as we all have many productive/good ideas which we can use for it. We have all come up with very good locations, ways of editing, camera shots, props, how to perform and also where is necessary to use lighting. We all enjoy this song and are comfortable to work on our own video to this song as the original video is plain and basic, we are planning to add more to our video and make it more productive.

Original artists Website Planning

I Play Dirty

The website promotes the artists by selling their clothing line which is very popular, this promotes the artist because everyone will buy the clothing and know the artist behind them ( so there songs will be heard because the clothing is on trend).

 Black SweatshirtGrey Sweatshirt

We see many photos of the artist in there sloganed clothing 'I Play Dirty', this will make the audience want to buy the clothing because the artist they admire is in them.

Black T-Shirt Grey T-Shirt

These pictures show us that there brand image is the clothing that they designed and which in they are promoting. This is effective because this will make there fans want to look like them and have the same brand image, they are original and started there own trend. This allows them not to only just promote there clothing but also there songs as they will be popular in many different ways.

Analysis of 3 music videos Planning

First music video that influenced us

Meek Mill- House Party (Skip Intro)

Editing: The slow motion in this video is very good and makes the video look effective, it makes the artist and girls look important ( this shows the male gaze ). The quick cuts to match the beat is an idea we would like to use.
Mise en Scene: The over crowded place is something we decide to use as it makes the house party look better. The shots of the girls makes the male gaze stand out. Also the pouring of the alcohol is an idea we would take from this video.

Second music Video that Influenced us

DVS - Cars European

Editing: The slow motion of the cars driving and pulling up is an idea that we would take from this video.
Mise en Scene: The idea of the artists infront of the cars rapping to the camera is something we are going to use.
Another idea is a close up of someones face iside the car next to the car window.

Third Music video that influenced us

SNEAKBO, ENGLISH FRANK, DVS, STEELO - CITY ON LOCK 2012

Editing: How the cuts match with the beat which makes the video flow. Some black an white shots also influenced us from this video because they look affective.
Mise en scene: The props they use are some props we would like to use ( shades, bottles, cars, girls ), also the flickering lighting would make the house party in out video look good.

Analysis of original video Planning

This is the original Video for the song

This video is very basic as it is just the 2 artist rapping in a plain white room infront of the camera with a couple of cutaways of the girls or the girls lips.

How our video will differ

We will have more things going on in our video, we will have more base tracks and different cutaways of different things. Our ideas are, firstly, a house party where we will get many shots of girls and boys dancing; drinking ( basically having a good time ). Were also going to get a couple cars and shoot the cars outside and inside. The artists will pull up in the cars and rap next to them and have cutaways of them in the cars with girls. We are also going to get the 2 main girls to dress up in an army styled costume and look nice infront of the camera in the green screen room. We are trieng to show the male gaze idea and show the males as very popular/good looking artists. Our video will differ because we will have more things going on in our video while the original one is plane.

Krept and Konan - Media

Krept and Konan are London based stars and started up from nothing. They promoted their music through social networking sites such as Facebook and twitter which increased their popularity. They were normal teenagers that gained their status through hard work, dedication and through their raw talent.

Risk Assesment Pitch

Risk Assessment

.There will be bottles of alcohol in the party, this could be a risk as someone could drink too much and start feeling sick or doing inappropriate things.

.We can keep the bottles closed or if they are over 18 make sure they only drink a reasonable amount.

.We will be doing various shots in cars and of cars/mopeds; this is a risk because we could cause a crash or damage to the vehicle and other people around us.

. We can make a very experienced driver drive orfilm the car shots in a clear/safe place.

.Music playing could be a risk because the neighbours could not agree with it and call the police or act aggressively.

.We can play the music low or before filming ask them for permission.

.Too many people in one place around the equipment could be a risk because the equipment could get damaged or lost.

.To prevent this we could plan every shot with the camera while being in the crowd so we know what we are doing and how long it will take.

Test Shots of Potential Performers Planning

Performers

This is a video if JB singing lyrics to a song

This is how he could perform in front of the camera. As we can see here, he is very confident and positive. This is good for our video because it will make the video look better becuase the performer will be lively. We also see the kind of actions he could do infront of the camera, this is important because if he was to just stand still infront of the camera still, it would look unprofessional.

This is a picture of the 2 performers ( Pats, JB)
We can see here the kind of things they could be wearing in the video and the kind of accessories they could use, like the shades or the watches. The clothes are urban and match the genre of the song. We also see that the 2 artists are close to eachother and have a good/friendly relationship. This is important because they will work well together and perform good.

We will have people dancing in our video
This will mean we will see girls and boys dancing in our video together and also seperately. This is good because it will make the party scene look real and effective. It will also be a good source for cutaways as it will add different visual images to the audience and make it unboring/plain.

Shot types for Pitch

Some Practice Shots we could use

This is a shot of a boy in the car

This is a practice video shot of an idea we had for our video, it is not clear as it was filmed at night on a flip camera with no lighting.

This is a practice shot of a boy drinking in our video.

Props for Pitch

This is another car we will use in our shots

Audience Planning

Audience for our video

Here are a few basic photographs of people that we feel that could represent our audience. The way the males are dressed is similar to the way in which Pats and JB would be likely to dress and the girls shown are examples of the sort of girls that Pats and JB would appeal to and attract.

This is a twitter profile of a British girl called Kirsty brown. She 19 years old and a fan of Pats and JB and follows there music and style. By looking at her tweets we get an idea of her interests and this helps us to understand how to appeal to her and others like her. Kirsty is an 'Aspirer' as she lives in London city and is very interested in how she looks and her status. She tends to shop for designer clothing and accessories for example she loves her Louis Vuitton handbag. She also likes to shop in Topshop which is a trendy and reasonably expensive high street store.

Kirsty also likes her gadgets as well as telling everyone about them. Her iPhone 5 seems to be her latest purchase. This reflects her love of showing off and maintaing status which may be why she likes rap music i.e Pats and JB. Rap music often comes with connotations of wealth and status and Kirsty finds this exciting and glamorous.

Shorts list/Test Shots Locations Planning

Locations

We will be filming in various locations for our music video. Our main locations for filming are:

  • A friends house - In which we will stage a party scene. This will be a constructed party scene and will not actually be a real party. We will film this party seen in the house shown below in  the recording.

The house in which we are going to stage a party.

  • Another main location for our filming will be outside the house on the street. This will be directly outside the house. While filming in the street we will also be filming in various cars which we have organised.
We will be Filming inside the car and outside on the pavement with the car in the background.
We will also be  filming in the street which is outside the location of our staged party scene.

  • During the Chorus we will be filming in front of the green screen and in front of a white wall as we are thinking to add moving images behind us while we are singing.
Choosing our locations is a key part of our planning and because the original video has only a simple white background, we have the opportunity to use all different types of backgrounds and locations. Location is a major part of mise-en-scene and can make a music video. Location is very important when creating a music video as it set the scene for the video which also creates a certain atmosphere, this adds to the overall outcome of the video.

Planning - Artist Research - Krept and Konan

Krept and Konan are two very popular artists from south London. They are very talented young men who are very big in London at the moment. As children Krept and Konan loved music they started creating songs as a hobby in their local areas. They met and became friends  later realising they are both passionate about music. Their fan base grew considerably when they realised their first songs for fun. They was not expecting them to be so popular. Unfortunately Konan was jailed only a couple of months after their first release. Konan was freed a year later and they both decided that a career in music was not on the cards. After several weeks and a little help from their friend  Krept and Konan back in the studio recording. This was a big transformation and the start of their musical career. They soon became very well-known and were focusing on putting all their effort into their music, making them successful artists today.

Planning - Original Video Analysis

Analysis of Music Video

I play dirty by Krept and Konan is a good example of what Goodwin would explain as disjuncture. Krept and Konan's video is focused on them mainly and does not amplify or illustrate the lyrics of the song.

Mise-en-scene:

Colours - This video has two different main  colour focuses. In most of the beginning shot and the chorus backtrack they background is grey, this works will with the colour of their sweaters and t-shirts which switch constantly from  black to white.
This is an example of the Black and White theme.
As you can see they are also both wearing dark shades.
Soon after the first verse the colour of the background changes and remains a light pink colour throughout until the end when it goes back to the grey background.
This is the example of the change in the background colour.
Girls dancing. Their make-up and outfits add colour to the video and brighten up the shot.
The girls in this music video are dressed in the same hoodie's as Krept and Konan. The girls hoodie's however are cut revealing more skin, making them look more appealing and sexy.

Camera work:
The various different shot types in this video highlight the main artists and make sure that all attention is on them.
Close-up of Krept at opening of music video
This is a close-up of Krept's face at the very beginning  of the video after the record label Play Dirty is shown on screen. This is the first time we see Krept. The close-up emphasises the importance of him within the song and introduces him to the audience as the main or one of the main artists.

Mid close-up of Krept at beginning of video
Mid close-up of Konan at beginning of video
Both above shots are mid close-ups of Krept and Konan. These shots appear as their names at said at the beginning of the song. This again introduces them to the audience and allows the audience to focus on them more, as they are the artists. It is also a pleasant introduction  to the song.

Example of two-shot: Krept and Konan

This is an example of a two-shot of Krept and Konan. They both take turns and switch from being in the front and being part of the background. in this shot their is more focus on the artist in front, in this case Krept as he is the one performing at that moment in the song.

Example of two-shot
The above screen shot is again a two-shot but with a girl which adds to the song rather then it simply just being Krept and Konan.

Extreme close-up of Lips at Chorus
This is an extreme close-up of a girls lips which runs through the whole of the chorus along with a couple other base tracks of girls dancing. The reason for this close-up is not to draw to much attention to the girl hence the reason her face is not shown while her lips are moving.

A major part of the camera work that makes this video successful is the camera movement. The camera constantly moves creating a video that moves with the beat. This creates a distorted affect which adds to the video as the song is up beat and fast.

Editing:
The fast pace editing of this music means the cuts between different base tracks are quick which adds extra effect to the video creating a more exciting product.

Along with the camera movement, various different shots and angles. The rapid editing adds extra depth to the video making it more interesting and fun. This video is a good example of a video that uses effects when editing. On various occasions the imagine is distorted or split into two.
