Analysis of a music video

This music video for Nicki Minaj - Superbass in my opinion is a perfect example of music video form. This is because it follows all the elements of a standard music video. To begin with, we see a close up shot of the artist. This is in order to establish who we are listening to and the image that they are trying to get accross. In this case Nicki Minaj is heavilly made up so we instantly feel that she is sexualised. Nicki's image is projected throughout the music video i.e little clothing, sexual dance moves and lots of the colour pink. She does this as her target audience consists mainly of young/teenage girls who are interested in all of these things.

The editing is repetitive throughout in the sense that it tends to speed up for the chorus. The editing has also followed the stereo-typical guidelines of a music video as there is atleast a subtle change of imagery whenever the chorus is heard and more often then not there is a particular scene which is repeated for the chorus. The speed of the editing is kept relevant to the genre and audience and tends to go to the beat of the track. My favourite example of this is where Nicki Minaj says 'got stacks on deck' and more money is addede to the pile with each word :

The camera angles have been manipulated to also help towards creating Nicki's chosen image. For example:

This low-angle shot makes us feel like we're looking up to her. Not only that but the clothes that she is wearing excentuate her figure and it is clear that from this camera angle she is sexualisede and make to look superior.

Finally, the mise en scene e.g pink cars, topless men, ice sculptures, swimming pools etc. give the feel of a glamorous and sexualised lifestyle. Again, this is what Nicki Minaj was aiming for.
